The reception of Der Freischütz surpassed Weber's own hopes and it quickly became an international success, with productions in Vienna the same year followed by Dresden, Leipzig, Hamburg, Munich, Karlsruhe, Königsberg, Prague, other German centres, Riga and Copenhagen. 1824 saw productions in four London theatres in four different adaptations, as well as the French premiere at the Théâtre de l'Odéon as Robin des Bois. Der Freischütz is one of the great milestones in the history of opera. The resounding success of its premiere in 1821 practically made it a manifesto for German Romantic opera, one that would become a significant formative influence on Wagner. And Theo Adam delivers a thoroughly spiteful, loathesome vocal portrait of the nefarious Kaspar, whose pact with the devil Samiel goes awry. For a work that is not performed nearly as often as it deserves to be, this recording is essential. Thomas May. Carlos Kleiber and the Staatskapelle Dresden to a masterful job in this 1973 recording. Quality and levels almost throughout the opera are outstanding. Read more. Carlos Kleiber's early 1970's recording of this stirring opera features a wonderful cast, superb work by the Dresden chorus, and of course the legendary sound of Dresden's great Staatskapelle. Anyone listening to this recording for the first time will note that spoken dialog plays a significant part, such as one finds in some of Mozart's Italian operas
