The Smithsonian Jazz Repertory Ensemble, an eightpiece group under the direction of Bob Wilber, made its New York debut Thursday evening at Carnegie Hall with a program that stretched from Jelly Roll Morton to Charlie Parker. It also included sam- plings of the repertories of Bix Beiderbecke, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, the Duke Ellington small groups and Thelonious Monk. Stylistically, this was a lot of territory for one small group of musicians to cover. James P. Johnson and Fats Waller are a normal part of Dick Wellstood's performances, but he also flavored the Morton, Ellington and Monk pieces with some appropriately atmospheric chords. JAZZ: The Smithsonian Anthology is a six-CD, box-set released by Smithsonian Folkways that covers the history of jazz. The set includes 111 tracks with representative works from many styles, including big band, dixieland, free jazz, fusion, Latin jazz, swing, and smooth jazz. Following requests for an update to Martin Williams's Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz 1973, Smithsonian Folkways began the process of selecting. Essentially an updated version of 1987s out of print The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, this expanded anthology is wonderfully diverse in the story it tells, with tracks from jazz artists across the stylistic board, from Stan Kenton to Sun Ra, Bill Evans to Chick Corea, Louis Armstrong to Cecil Taylor, with stops everywhere in between, and any conceivable branch of the. genre is represented by at least one selection.
