When African Cookbook was recorded in 1964, pianist Randy Weston had no luck interesting any label to release the music, so he came out with it independently on his tiny Bakton company. In 1972, Atlantic released the performances. It is surprising that no company in the mid-'60s signed Weston, because Willie's Tune, from this set, had the potential to catch on, and Berkshire Blues is somewhat well-known and the mixture of accessible bop with African rhythms overall is appealing. Randy Westons African Cookbook releasedRandy Westons African Cookbook releasedeventually. Posted on 9th April 2016. Title: African Cookbook. Label: Pure Pleasure. Thats quite a gestation The problem was that Weston couldnt find anyone willing to release it. In fact, such was the lack on interest that Weston, a talented pianist, ended up releasing it on his tiny Bakton label before Atlantic took a punt. The arrangements are largely down the the trumpet player, Ray Copeland while Weston himself was the songwriter. All in all, this is a detailed, fresh, open and dynamic album. Great content, great mastering. What more could you ask for . Cookbook is an early album by Weston from 1964. It was retitled some time in the 70s -which is confusing because there's another Weston album out that is also entitled African Cookbook. The basic format is piano-horns quintet -Weston with trumpeter Ray Copeland and tenor sax player Booker Ervin plus bass and drums on the first four cuts, the same group with two African drummers added on cuts 5-7. It's vintage Weston -starts with a jazz waltz, a patented specialty of Weston's think Little Niles, continues with a plaintive ballad that showcases Ervin, and so on.
