John Coltrane - tenor saxophone Pharoah Sanders - tenor saxophone, percussion McCoy Tyner - piano Jimmy Garrison - double bass Donald Rafael Garrett - Sé Mama is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane. Recorded during 1965, it was released in early 1967 as Impulse A-9106 AS-9106 for the stereo version. The title piece and Selflessness were recorded in October 1965 and feature a large ensemble including Sanders, Garrett, Butler and Lewis. The other tracks, Vigil, Welcome and Dusk Dawn, feature the classic quartet Coltrane, Jones, Garrison and Tyner. While any John Coltrane album is rewarding, Kulu Sé Mama's proximity to astral jazz will make it, for some listeners, especially enjoyable. Its roots are clearly audible on the 18:49 minute title track of Kulu Sé Mama. Kulu Sé Mama, recorded in October 1965 in Los Angeles, features Coltrane's classic quartet-with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones-but every instrument save the piano is doubled up by additional musicians. Sanders joins Coltrane on tenor, Donald Garrett joins Garrison on bass and bass clarinet, and Frank Butler joins Jones on drums. This is one of the few times where I actually prefer the bonus tracks over the original LP one's. The opening title track, Kulu Sé Mama (Juno Sé Mama), is an OK set but it doesn't feature enough Coltrane in my opinion. It's a pretty forgetable set but has some high points. The following track, Vigil is basically a track that sounds much like a session from Interstellar Space. My favorite track on here is Welcome because it seems to be one of the better produced and thought out tracks on the original LP. The only real Modal one as well. The bonus tracks are great too. The only differance between the two takes of Dusk Dawn is another closing part by Coltrane. Overall this is an odd album. It features three styles of jazz in one disc.
