L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato The Cheerful, the Thoughtful, and the Moderate Man HWV 55 is a pastoral ode by George Frideric Handel based on the poetry of John Milton. Handel composed the work over the period of 19 January to 4 February 1740, and the work was premiered on 27 February 1740 at the Royal Theatre of Lincoln's Inn Fields. At the urging of one of Handel's librettists, Charles Jennens, Milton's two poems, L'Allegro and il Penseroso, were arranged by James Harris, interleaving. Il Penseroso Hence Vain Deluding Joys P. There are numerous recordings of this music, including an early effort under the baton of John Eliot Gardiner which many fans praise highly. Gardiner omits the third portion, Il Moderato, and perhaps with reason. The text, by Handel's collaborator Charles Jennens, isn't worthy of being a side-car to Milton's poem, and the music is correspondingly less inspired. Handel himself omitted Il Moderato in subsequent revival performances. Baroque specialist Gardiner turns in apt performances, all recorded in the 1980s. His L'Allegro is mighty and monumental, with lovely lyrical touches his Tamerlano deeply expressive and highly dramatic, with astounding vocal writing and his trio of ballets catchy, colorful, and buoyantly rhythmic. L'Allegro, il Penseroso, ed il Moderato. Pastoral Ode. Name Translations. Did Handel himself make this misspelling Understandably, he was quite familiar with the italian language, so maybe we owe it to Milton. While Milton's Il Penseroso is an ode, Handel's work based on it does not seem to have used the word ode, although there is no autograph manuscript available at IMSLP as of yet. Hence, this is tagged as an oratorio and not as an ode, though if the word ode appears on an autograph manuscript, the tag can be added
