Big Boss Band is the 1990 studio album of George Benson on Warner Bros. featuring the Count Basie Orchestra. This is Benson's second consecutive album which returns to his jazz roots after his successful pop career in the 1980s, and also his debut as sole producer of an album. The genre is mainly big band swing with some Michel Legrand and R&B thrown in. In his liner notes, Benson writes that in 1983 he made a promise to Count Basie to do his Basie's music justice on an album such as Big Boss Band. The Count Basie Orchestra is a 16 to 18 piece big band, one of the most prominent jazz performing groups of the swing era, founded by Count Basie in 1935 and recording regularly from 1936. Despite a brief disbandment at the beginning of the 1950s, the band survived long past the Big Band era itself and the death of Basie in 1984. It continues as a 'ghost band'. This project had its genesis back in 1983 with a Benson promise to Count Basie that he would record an album in his style, a promise partially fulfilled the following year with 2020's Beyond the Sea. Focusing on standards that steer commendably clear from tunes normally associated with Basie, Benson takes on the dual challenge of big-band singer and lead guitarist and succeeds with authority in both roles. Track 2 also features The Robert Farnon Orchestra but the members are not identified and this is a long running orchestra stretching over several decades with many previous members impossible to identify. Yes, indeed, it would have been nice if George Benson has made an album orchestrated by Robert Farnon, an exceptional arrangerconductor who died a year ago and whose works especially on Sinatra recordings are absolute masterpieces. Although he arranged and conducted his own orchestra on only a single song here, it's truly remarkable and one of the album's highlights, A Portrait of Jennie. I love Big Band music and to me Big Boss Band is one of the greatest albums of all-time. Ready Now That You Are. George Benson with Count Basie Orchestra
