Album

The Underground Spiritual Game is a compilation of twelve tracks by Fela Kuti, selected and mixed by Blackalicious producer Chief Xcel. Intro 0:26. Ololufe Mi 1:08. Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am 2:35. Look and Laugh 4:18. Mr Grammarticologylisationalism Is the Boss 8:02. Monkey Banana 2:19. Ariya 5:27. Unnecessary Begging 8:35. Swegbe & Pako 3:37. Follow Follow 5:52. Africa Center of the World 17:22. Fela, still due for more of a surge in popularity than he ever really got, has one more chance posthumously with this album. A number of songs from across the entirety of Fela's long career are represented, from the old Koola Lobitos days up through the Egypt '80 period and a short cooperation with Roy Ayers. All of it, though, is remixed by Chief Xcel. The remixing is somewhat minimal - no flights of fantasy, breakbeats, and the like that comprise the usual course of events in a proper remix album. Includes 11 album tracks from FELA KUTI's AFRICA 70, EGYPT 80, and KOOLA LOBITOS lineups, near and dear to the heart of executive producer CHIEF XCEL of BLACKALICIOUS. A new take on the catalog of the founder of afro-beat and one of funkjazz's most important innovators. Many of Fela Kuti's albums have been reissued since his death from AIDS in 1997, but the Underground Spiritual Game is different kind of effort. The 12 tracks on this compilation are reassembled by Blackalicious's Chief Xcel, who seamlessly fuses them all together into one unstoppable Afro-funk. Album 2004 11 Songs. The Underground Spiritual Game is an unbroken set of Kuti's music taken from throughout his career, meticulously compiled and mixed by Chief Xcel. Xcel is one half of Blackalicious, a hip-hop act that have themselves begun realizing the full potential of discourse inherent in their genre, and Xcel hopes to continue making his way through Fela Kuti's enormous output. Fela's songs are built on repeated midtempo grooves, and structured around call-and-response sections between Kuti and his band. The jazz influence is readily apparent in the solos, as well as the hooks of his horn section. But the music centers on Kuti's espoused ideology of Pan-Africanism.
