On Void Dweller, as with his other work done with the close involvement of Depth Charge's J. Saul Kane, he does just that, with a fairly consistent picture of dance as combination crowd-pleaser and sonic creepout. Void Dweller LP, Album. Columbia, Vinyl Solution. Void Dweller' is a slice of nostalgia for old rave heads like me. Many of the mad rave tunes of the 80's and early 90's do not stand the test of time. This album DEFINITELY does stand the test of time. Many of the tunes are full on bangin' numbers, with only the occasional departure into slower numbers. Of particular note is the track 'Electromagnetic Waves' a breakbeat trance track which predates popular breakbeat and of course the Dune-inspired tracks 'Fear The Mindkiller' and 'Spice'. This is an amazing release that I came upon by chance. This is a fine example (if not the finest) of a blend of the Detroit Techno sound and the UK Breakbeat/Hardcore phenomenon. Intensely dark, yet comical at times, every single tune on here is a 5 star masterpiece. What really blows me away is how well this album tows the line and does not stray into either one genre. It is in a class all of its own considering that it was released at the height of the Old Skool movement. I am not the best at writing reviews and using fancy adjectives, but after listening to this for the 1st time I knew I had to say something about it. If you dig Old Skool Rave and Detroit Techno then you do not want to pass this one up! Amazing to say the least...
Man you're so right on relating this to detroit techno. I never realized it at the time. Explains why I loved it so much. Especially the track 'A Kind Of Living' sounds like it could be right off a Red Planet 12".
